Why North Jersey Homes Need Regular Dryer Vent Cleaning

Older housing stock — Victorians in Montclair, detached rear garages in Bloomfield, Colonials in Maplewood — often has dryer vent runs that were retrofitted into chimneys, basements or crawl spaces decades ago. Long runs, multiple elbows and flexible foil ducting all trap lint at a much higher rate than a modern, short, rigid metal run.

The U.S. Fire Administration attributes roughly 2,900 home fires every year to clothes dryers, with failure to clean the vent line as the leading cause. In an older North Jersey home, the warning signs are usually subtle for a long time — clothes taking two cycles to dry, a dryer that's hot to the touch, a faint burning smell — until they aren't.

We clean the entire run from the dryer to the exterior wall cap, photograph the work, and tell you honestly whether your setup needs more than a cleaning. If a flexible foil section is collapsed inside a wall, no amount of cleaning will fix it. We'll show you on camera and quote the reroute.

Rule of thumb: dryer vents should be cleaned at least once per year. Households with pets, large families or longer-than-average vent runs should plan on every six months.
